Flyer Describing Benefits of Bloodflow Restriction

What is Bloodflow Restriction Training?

Bloodflow Restriction or BFR training is a technique by which an inflatable cuff is used to partially restrict arterial inflow and fully restrict venous outflow. BFR is used together with resistance exercise, aerobic exercise, or passively without exercise to help improve muscular size, strength, aerobic capacity. Bloodflow restriction allows individuals to reap the benefits of high-intensity training with lighter loads and decreased stress on muscular tissue. Research has shown that utilizing Bloodflow Restriction at 30% of an individuals 1 rep max can elicit the same metabolic stress as someone training at 65% of their 1 rep max without BFR.

Benefits of Bloodflow Restriction Training

  • Allows for strengthening of muscles in areas that may be limited by pain, injury, or recent surgery
  • Increase muscular strength and size
  • Decreased stress to joints and muscular tissue
  • Improved bone mineral density
  • FASTER RECOVERY

How Does Bloodflow Restriction Training Work?

1. A pneumatic cuff or tourniquet is applied to the target body part and inflated until venous bloodflow is fully restricted.

2. An individual will then perform low load execises (20-40% of 1RM) as prescribed by their physical therapist, typically 4 sets of 30/15/15/15 with short rest breaks (between 30-60 seconds). This can also be performed in certain situations without exercise, completely passively.

3.) The pneumatic cuff is then released, and you are done!

Contraindications to BFR

  • History of Blood Clots
  • Circulation Problems
  • Severe, Uncontrolled Hypertension
  • Varicose Veins
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Pregnancy
